Coyote : At a beach area. Along a dirt path between the parking lot and the stream a woman comes in the late afternoon/early evening to leave wet and dry cat food for the cats. I don't think these are feral cats, but rather neighborhood cats. We usually see the same 3 or 4 cats in the area. A gray one, a black one, a short raggedy looking dark calico and another one from time to time. Up the street someone else used to feed the cats and we'd drive by and see the cats eating the food... as well as skunks. I guess the cats and skunks have some sort of pact that they can share the food. We didn't used to see the skunks at the rocks on the beach, just the cats and some squirrels. People will come and bring bread for the ducks and birds. Suddenly a coyote has discovered the food. Last week there was a lot of tail lifting and threatening the coyote to back off and stay away from the food by the skunks. The coyote has made no move to attack either the cats or the skunks. In this series of photos the skunks were aready in the area eating the cat food. The cats approached, but stayed on the rocks until the skunks and the coyote finished eating. This time we had a crowd of people (well there were 5 or 6 of us) standing on the sidewalk watching the action. Some people thought the coyote was a fox. No one thought it was a dog. They weren't aware of the skunks until I was able to point them out. One person was worried that the coyote would attack the cats, but I reassured that person the cats were just fine and all three species were sharing the food, whether they wanted to or not. Coyote ducks his (we think) head into the hole, grabs food and immediately spins around to watch the surrounding area while he eats. Then he'll go duck in for another mouthful, etc. Coyote will dart if he sees dogs, bike riders and if people get too close. To the right of the path is a steep short hill that borders the wetlands area where the Mallards live. Occasionally we will see a heron in the wetlands too.
